Narrative: Al Gore-New Leader of Change

Prepared by Morgan Petiti

Many people believe that global warming does not exist, and therefore is not an issue. Little do they know, it
has been proven by scientists that global warming, or climate change, is actually occurring. Al Gore helps
prove this not only with his actions, but also in his book titled An Inconvenient Truth. Gore has realized the
situation at hand, and the actions necessary to make the change needed. Gore has multiple incidents that have
either interested him in creating a change, or an action he took to help create the change.
The first incident that led Al Gore to realize that the change was needed was when Gore was at college and
had Professor Roger Revelle as a teacher. Roger Revelle was an avid explorer of global warming, and he got
Gore hooked when. Professor Revelle made many people interested in the climate change because even
Gore says that, “I am only one of many students inspired by Revelle” (Gore 41). Revelle created a platform
for all of his students to study by. He made it so each and every one of his students would be pushed and
want to find the solution to climate change. Gore took this passion and made it a passion of his own, making
climate change a top priority. At the time, the system involved would be the everyday society. Even though
society seemed to be concerned and wanting to change, it turns out that most of society was actually the
exact opposite. They did not feel that climate change was as big of a problem as Al Gore and Professor
Revelle thought that it was.
Another incident that occurred was when Al Gore was the senator of Tennessee. He would work in
Washington DC, and then for four months every year, he would live “…on a big, sprawling, beautiful farm in
Tennessee with animals, sunlight, and grass, all nestled in a sweeping bend of the clear and sparkling Caney
Fork River” (Gore 122). When Gore was at his home in Tennessee, he found it to be more peaceful and
eco-friendly than when he was living in his small apartment in Washington DC. “I breathed freely-full chested,
invigorating breaths-unlike any I ever took on the streets of Washington, DC” (Gore 122). Gore wants to
reveal the difference between the polluted urban places, which are major contributors to global warming, and
the non-polluted rural places, which have low emissions in pollution. Gore shows that living in a less polluted
area actually makes a person feel better, or healthier in a sense.
Another time that Gore saw that global warming was truly taking effect on the earth was when he went and
visited both the North and the South Pole. Gore believes that, “One can read field studies, talk to scientists,
and scrutinize charts, but there’s nothing like seeing things for yourself” (Gore 138). Gore took the action of
visiting both of the poles and actually seeing what devastation was going on because of global warming,
instead of just relying on scientists to tell him facts that could be debated about. Gore believes that people
need to see what they are truly doing in order to understand fully what is going on. People can not just look
at the facts laid out by scientists anymore. They need to see what they are doing wrong and find a solution to
fix what has been happening.
Gore is the leader of many people fighting against global warming. Although many people believe that there is
no such thing as global warming, Gore shows through his PowerPoint and book that it is real, and is actually
happening. Gore is attempting to have people start a change in the way they live, so future generations will be
able to live long and prosper. He wants to save the world from an impending doom if people do not make
the change necessary. Gore is the guardian, the leader of change.
